Mount Loura

Mount Loura rises to around 1,515 metres near Mali-ville in northern Guinea and is the highest point in the Fouta Djallon, a plateau summit with grassland and rock rather than a peak. On its flank is the Dame de Mali, a rock formation that reads from the right angle as a woman's face in profile looking out over the escarpment. The view north runs into Senegal on clear days.

When to go

November to April is the dry season and the practical window. Harmattan haze in December and January cuts the view. The rains make the tracks difficult.

Honest expectations

The face formation only reads from specific angles and disappoints from others. Harmattan haze frequently closes the long view. Facilities at Mali-ville are minimal.
