Kindia is the first substantial city on the road inland from Conakry, sitting below the Fouta Djallon escarpment in country that grows citrus, pineapple and bananas and holds bauxite mines. Its market is large and the town is a natural stop between the coast and the highlands. The Voile de la Mariée falls and the Pasteur Institute research station are nearby. The Pasteur Institute maintained a research station here from the colonial period, working on primates and on vaccine production.
