Forécariah lies on the coastal plain southeast of Conakry near the Sierra Leonean border, a town in mangrove and rice country with a market and a long history as a Susu centre and a trading point on the routes south. The rivers here run out through mangrove to the sea and the estuaries hold birdlife. The border crossing to Sierra Leone is a short distance further on. The town was the seat of a Susu chieftaincy before the colonial period, and the family that held it remained locally significant afterwards.

What you actually see

  • The market - the trading centre for the southern coastal plain.
  • The rice country - the cultivation on the flats around the town.
  • The mangrove estuaries - the river mouths running out to the sea.
  • The border position - the route south toward Sierra Leone.

When to go

November to April is the dry season. The rains from May to October are heavy on this coast. Market days are busiest.

Honest expectations

There is little for a visitor and the town is workaday. Facilities are basic. Border proximity means checkpoints on the roads south.

Nearby

Conakry is northwest, and the Sierra Leonean border is south.
