The Bossou Chimpanzees

The hills around Bossou village hold one of primatology's most famous communities: chimpanzees that crack oil-palm nuts with hammer-and-anvil stones - tool culture documented here across decades of research that made Bossou a cornerstone of what we know about our closest relatives. The chimps live startlingly close to human fields, protected by local custom that regards them as kin, and village guides lead small groups on forest walks where sightings, while never promised, ride good odds in season. It is wildlife viewing at its most intimate scale - a village, its sacred hills and the apes both parties have agreed to share.

When to go

November to March, the dry months, give the best trails and sighting rhythms; mornings are the chimps' active hours. Numbers are small and group sizes limited - arrange ahead through Lola or Nzerekore.

Sightings are probable, not guaranteed - the forest is theirs; distance rules, mask-and-health protocols and guide instructions protect apes vulnerable to human illness, and following them is non-negotiable.
