Cacheu

On the Cacheu river's wide brown reach stands one of West Africa's oldest European footholds: the small square fort the Portuguese built in stone in the 1640s, successor to a stockade of 1589, cannon still at its corners, anchor of a town that became a major slave-trading port - a history the site now addresses directly through a memorial and interpretation centre that names the trade for what it was. History

The town stands in Papel territory and takes its name from the Bainuk Caticheu, "the place where we rest". It was one of the earliest European settlements in sub-Saharan Africa, home from the late sixteenth century to Cape Verdean and Portuguese traders and exiles; after the English slaver John Hawkins raided it in 1567, the traders obtained permission from the king of Cacheu in 1589 to build a stockade and moved into it in 1591, the crown granted a municipal charter in 1605, when there were about 1500 inhabitants, and the stone fort that still stands was built in the 1640s.
