Quinhamel sits west of Bissau on a creek off the Mansoa river, the main town of the Biombo region and a centre of the Pepel people, and it is known for the panos, the narrow-strip woven cloths that carry meaning in Guinean society and are used in ceremony and exchange. A weaving cooperative works in the town. Cashew orchards cover the country around and mangrove lines the water. The panos are used as currency in some ceremonial contexts and their patterns carry specific meanings.

What you actually see

  • The pano weaving - the narrow-strip cloths made in the town.
  • The weaving cooperative - the workshop where the cloths are made.
  • The mangrove creek - the water the town sits on.
  • The cashew country - the orchards covering the surrounding ground.

When to go

November to May is the dry season. Cashew harvest runs around March to June. Market days are busiest.

Honest expectations

The cooperative keeps informal hours and seeing weaving depends on timing. There is little else in the town. Facilities are basic.

Nearby

Bissau is east, and the Bijagós ferry runs from the capital.
