Tacana Volcano

Tacana rises to just over four thousand metres on the frontier itself, with the border running across the summit, and it is the second highest volcano in Guatemala after its neighbour Tajumulco. It is climbed far less often, which is much of its appeal: the route goes up from villages on the Guatemalan side through farmland and pine forest onto open paramo-like ground, with the summit crater at the top and views across into Chiapas on one side and back over the western highlands on the other. The mountain is considered sacred by communities on both sides and ceremonies are held on it. It has fumaroles and is classified as active.

When to go

November to April, the settled season here. Two days, with a camp or a night in a village. Nights are freezing at altitude. Local guides are needed.

Practical notes

The route is less travelled and less marked than Tajumulco and a guide is necessary. It is cold and the altitude affects people. Facilities are village-level at best. It is a border area, so carry identification.
