River Antoine Distillery

The Caribbean's oldest working water-powered distillery - rum made since 1785 by waterwheel, cane crusher and open fire, strong enough to stay home.

River Antoine has made rum the same way since 1785, and walking its yard is industrial time travel: a huge iron waterwheel turned by the river drives the cane crusher, juice ferments wild in open concrete, and copper pot stills fired by the crushed cane's own bagasse run a spirit bottled at strengths that reach 75% - the famous Rivers rum that airlines will not carry, forcing a lower-proof version for travellers. Nothing is dressed up for visitors; the tour steps around working machinery and ends at a tasting shack where the strong stuff introduces itself directly.

What you actually see

  • The waterwheel - the river-driven wheel powering the cane crusher.
  • Open fermentation and pot stills - the eighteenth-century process, unchanged.
  • The tasting - Rivers at full strength, and the exportable version.
  • The cane yards - ox-era agriculture continuing by tractor and hand.

When to go

Cane season through the first half of the year shows the full process running; out of season the machinery may stand quiet, so ask before the drive. Weekday mornings are the working hours.

Honest expectations

This is a working antique, not a safety-railed attraction: surfaces are uneven, machinery is open and the tour is informal. The full-strength rum is genuinely fierce - taste accordingly, and remember the 75% bottle cannot fly in luggage; buy the under-70% export version for the suitcase. Roads in are potholed.

Nearby

Belmont Estate, Lake Antoine's crater and the north-east beaches.
