Getting thereSauteurs town, northern Grenada
EntrySmall site fee

The town of Sauteurs - 'leapers' in French - takes its name from the event remembered at this clifftop: in 1651, the last organised Kalinago resistance on Grenada, facing defeat by French colonists, chose to leap from the forty-metre cliff into the sea rather than submit. The site holds a memorial garden, interpretive panels telling the Kalinago story beyond that single day, and the cliff-edge view north across the channel toward the Grenadines. It is a small site carrying the island's heaviest founding memory, and the town around it goes about its fishing-and-market life.

What you actually see

  • The memorial cliff - the leap site and its commemorative garden.
  • The interpretive panels - Kalinago history before and beyond 1651.
  • The channel view - Carriacou and the Grenadines on clear days.
  • Sauteurs town - the fishing town wrapped around the hill.

When to go

Year round; the dry season pairs it best with the north's estates and beaches. Morning light favours the channel view. The annual remembrance events bring the site its fullest local meaning.

Honest expectations

The site is modest - a garden, panels and a cliff - and the visit is short; its weight is historical, not visual. Approach it as memorial ground: this commemorates deaths chosen over enslavement, and local sensitivity deserves matching behaviour. Combine with Belmont and River Antoine for the northern day.

Nearby

Belmont Estate, River Antoine and Levera's beaches and mangroves.
