Getting thereIn Gouyave on the west coast road; around forty minutes from St George's
EntryFree; food paid per item

Every Friday evening two streets in Gouyave close to traffic and fill with stalls selling fish, and the town, which has worked the water for generations, cooks what came in that day: grilled lambi, fish cakes, lobster in season, saltfish, jacks, callaloo. It started in the early 2000s as a way of bringing money into the town and has become the standard Friday night out on the island.

What you actually see

  • The closed streets - two roads given over to stalls for the evening.
  • The day's catch - fish cooked from what the boats brought in.
  • The lambi - conch grilled and served in several forms.
  • The origin - an event started in the 2000s to bring trade into the town.

When to go

Every Friday evening, year round. It gets going after dark and runs late. Lobster is only available in season.

Honest expectations

It is crowded and the drive back to the south on a dark winding road at night takes care. Prices have risen and it is no longer particularly cheap. Some stalls run out early.

Nearby

Concord Falls is south, and Victoria is north.
