School of Aristotle at Mieza

Ancient sources record that Philip II sent his son away from the court at Pella to be educated by Aristotle at the Nymphaion of Mieza, and this terrace beneath a low cliff, with springs, caves and cuttings for a stoa in the rock, has been identified with that school since excavation in the 1960s. What survives is modest: rock-cut sockets and steps where a colonnade stood, the mouths of small caves, plane trees and running water, and a path along the base of the cliff. There is no museum on site and no statuary, which leaves the visitor with the setting itself, cool, green and unexpectedly intimate. Around Mieza in the surrounding fields lie several painted Macedonian tombs, some open by arrangement, and the whole area belongs to the Vergina-Naoussa archaeological landscape.

When to go

Spring and autumn; the terrace is shaded and cool, which makes summer visits pleasant too. The site keeps limited hours and can be closed on weekdays.

Honest expectations

There is very little to see in physical terms, and visitors expecting a school building will be disappointed; the identification itself, though widely accepted, rests on interpretation. The visit takes half an hour. The nearby tombs open irregularly.
