Mount Olympus

Olympus is where geography agreed to host mythology: a massif rising nearly three thousand metres straight from the Aegean coast, its summit ridge so often wrapped in cloud and thrown with lightning that antiquity placed the gods there and nobody argued. Greece's first national park protects its forests and gorges, and the classic ascent is a proper mountaineering journey in miniature - up the Enipeas gorge or from Prionia through beech and black pine to the stone refuges, a night above the clouds, then the dawn push to Mytikas, the highest point, whose final stretch is an exposed scramble that earns the summit rather than gives it away. Skala and Skolio peaks offer nearly equal height without the scramble for those who prefer their gods admired from a respectful distance.

When to go

The reliable window is roughly mid June to September, when refuges operate and the summit rocks run mostly free of snow; July and August are busiest on the trail and safest overhead, though afternoon storms remain the mountain's oldest habit - summit early, descend early. Autumn colours the beech forest; winter Olympus belongs to equipped alpinists only.

Honest expectations

Mytikas is not a walk: the last section is a hands-on scramble over exposed rock where a slip matters, and vertigo-prone hikers should take Skala or Skolio instead with zero shame - the view differs by metres. Refuge beds are limited and book out for summer weekends. Weather turns fast at three thousand metres regardless of the beach sunshine below; pack real layers. Fitness honest: it is a long two days, and the gorge day-walk is the right choice for many.
