Mount Daraitan and Tinipak River

Daraitan packs two very different things into one day. The mountain is a steep, rooty climb of about two hours to a limestone summit at around six hundred metres, where the rock breaks open in ledges above a bend of the Daraitan river and the Sierra Madre rolls away in ridges - the standard sunrise objective, started in the dark. The river is the other half: a short walk from the village leads to the Tinipak, where the water has cut through white marble and left the riverbed strewn with bleached boulders the size of rooms, gaps that swallow the current, and pools of startling blue-green between them. Guides take visitors on across the boulders to the Tinipak cave, a chamber entered by a short scramble with a cold pool inside. The barangay runs the whole operation with mandatory registration, assigned guides and river fees, and closes trails outright when the water rises.

• The blue pools - swimming holes between the boulders.
• Tinipak cave - the chamber and its cold pool.

When to go

November to May; the river is dangerous in the rainy season and the barangay closes access after heavy rain. Sunrise climbs start around 3 am from the village.

Honest expectations

The climb is steeper and rootier than the height suggests, and the boulder scrambling is genuine. Guides are compulsory. Weekend crowds are large; camping in the village is basic and cash-only.
