Mount Choungui, rising in a distinctive sharp cone in the south of Mayotte, is one of the island's most iconic natural landmarks and its most rewarding climb. Though only some 594 metres high, its steep, pointed summit stands out dramatically from the surrounding green landscape, and the trail to the top, climbing through forest and up a challengingly steep final scramble, is a favourite adventure for visitors and locals alike. From the summit unfolds a breathtaking panorama over the whole south of the island, its patchwork of hills and villages, the great turquoise lagoon and barrier reef, and the ocean beyond. Home to lemurs and rich birdlife on its slopes, Mount Choungui offers a fine hike and one of the finest views in Mayotte.
What you actually see
- The pointed summit - the distinctive sharp peak.
- The panoramic view - the vista over the island and lagoon.
- The forest trail - the climb through forest and steep scramble.
- The wildlife - the lemurs and birdlife on the slopes.
When to go
May to October, the cooler, drier season, is the best time for the climb, avoiding the heat and mud of the wetter months; clear mornings offer the finest views from the summit before any afternoon cloud. The dry season makes the steep trail safer and more comfortable.
Honest expectations
The climb, though not long, is steep and demanding, especially the final scramble, so reasonable fitness and care are needed, and the trail can be slippery when wet. As the iconic pointed peak of Mayotte, offering a rewarding hike and a breathtaking panorama over the island, lagoon and reef, though, Mount Choungui is a genuinely worthwhile and memorable adventure.
