Marathi Marble Quarries

Parian marble was the finest sculptural stone of the ancient world, prized for a translucency that let light penetrate several centimetres, and it came from these hillsides. Because the best seams ran underground, quarrying went into the rock rather than down from the surface, leaving sloping tunnels and galleries that visitors can walk into. Marble from here became the Venus de Milo, the Hermes of Praxiteles, much of the Delphi sculpture and countless other works. A relief of nymphs is carved at one tunnel mouth. French and Belgian companies reopened the quarries in the nineteenth century and left industrial buildings, now derelict, on the slope. Nothing is fenced, lit or signed beyond a small marker.

When to go

Autumn to spring, when the ground is dry enough underfoot and the heat is bearable; the site has no shade. Midday sun reaches into the tunnel mouths.

Practical notes

This is an unmanaged site with open shafts, loose rock and no lighting or railings, and going deep into the tunnels is genuinely unsafe without proper equipment. There is no ticket office, guide or interpretation. Access tracks are rough and parking informal.
