Koukounaries takes its name from the umbrella pines, koukounaria, that grow right down to the back of the sand, and the combination of very fine pale sand, shallow clear water and a dense pine backdrop has made it the best-known beach in the Sporades. It runs about a kilometre in a shallow curve at the southwestern end of Skiathos. Behind it lies Strofilia lake, a wetland of pine, reed and open water that is a protected Natura site with a marked path around part of it, home to herons, terrapins and migrating birds. The beach is fully organised with sunbeds, canteens and watersports along most of its length, and the last bus and boat runs make it easy to reach without a car.

What you actually see

  • The pine backdrop - umbrella pines growing to the edge of the sand.
  • The fine pale sand - a kilometre of soft beach in a shallow curve.
  • Strofilia lake - a protected wetland with a walking path behind.
  • The shallow water - clear and gently shelving along the bay.

When to go

May, June and September for warm sea and space on the sand; July and August fill it completely, with sunbeds covering nearly all the front row by mid-morning. Boats from the town run through the season.

Honest expectations

The beach is heavily commercialised and crowded in high season, with music from beach bars and watersports noise. Free sand is limited. Parking is paid and fills early. The lake path is short and can be muddy.

Nearby

Banana and Agia Eleni beaches are minutes away; Skiathos Town and the Kastro lie east and north.
