Kafeneio Culture

The kafeneio is the plain original of the Greek coffee shop: a room with a few tables, bentwood chairs, a television in the corner, backgammon boards, and an owner who has run it for thirty years. The order is usually a single Greek coffee, made in a briki and served with a glass of water, sweet, medium or plain, nursed for an hour or more; the cup is a rent for the chair rather than the point of the visit. Traditionally the clientele was male and older, and in many villages it still is, though the line has blurred in towns. Business gets discussed, politics argued and the day passed. The modern kafeteria that dominates city centres is a different institution entirely.

When to go

Any time; the rhythm is morning for older regulars, late afternoon for the crowd after the siesta, and evening for card games. Sundays after church fill the tables in villages.

Honest expectations

Some traditional kafeneia remain effectively male spaces, and a solo woman may draw attention in remote villages, though nobody is turned away. English is often not spoken. The coffee is strong, unfiltered and served with grounds at the bottom, which surprises first-timers.
