Hydra made one decision that changed everything: no cars, no scooters, nothing on wheels beyond a rubbish truck - and the silence that follows is the island's luxury. Grey stone captains' mansions amphitheatre around a harbour that sailed a famous fleet in the War of Independence; donkeys and water taxis handle all transport; and the paths out of town lead to swimming rocks, pine coves and monasteries in hills that glow at dusk. When to go

Late spring and early autumn are Hydra's own seasons - warm sea, walkable hills, tables by the water without the squeeze. Summer weekends import Athens' crowds and yacht traffic; midweek stays keep the spell. Winter is shuttered, local and beloved by the island's artists for exactly that.

Honest expectations

Hydra's beauty commands island-fashionable prices, and its beaches are mostly rock platforms and pebble coves - swimmers who need sand should look elsewhere; swimmers who love diving off rocks into clear deep water are home. Luggage travels by donkey or hand: pack light or pay for the hoof-taxi. Day-trippers see the harbour; the island's calm arrives after the last ferry leaves.
