Evros Delta

The Evros delta covers roughly 200 square kilometres of lagoons, salt marsh, reedbed and mudflat where the river reaches the Thracian Sea, and it is among the most important wetlands in Europe: over 300 bird species have been recorded, including large wintering flocks of geese, ducks and waders, pygmy cormorants, Dalmatian pelicans and occasional flamingos, along with rarities that draw birders from across the continent. A visitor centre organises guided vehicle tours and boat trips along the channels, which is the practical way to see the area. Because the river forms an international border, parts of the delta lie in a controlled zone and access is regulated, with identification required and some areas closed; visitors should follow the centre's guidance rather than exploring independently.

When to go

November to April for the greatest concentrations, with midwinter the peak; spring migration in March and April adds waders and terns. Summer is hot, still and comparatively empty.

Honest expectations

Independent wandering is not appropriate here: access is regulated, roads are unmarked and some zones are restricted, so book through the visitor centre. Facilities in the delta itself are minimal. Serious birding requires a scope and an early start.
