Benaki Museum

The Benaki is the museum that tells Greece's story whole: founded by the collector Antonis Benakis in his family's neoclassical mansion, it runs the entire arc in one building - Cycladic marble figures, classical gold, Byzantine icons, embroidered island costumes, carved wooden church screens, and up through the relics and paintings of the 1821 War of Independence. Where the great archaeological museums stop at antiquity, the Benaki insists the civilisation continued, and its folk-art floors - bridal dresses, silverwork, two complete carved-wood reception rooms from Ottoman-era mansions - are for many visitors the revelation. Honest expectations

The Benaki competes for time with the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological - on a short trip it usually loses, which is exactly why unhurried visitors love it: it is the least crowded of the three and the only one telling the post-antique story. Labels are good but the sweep is dense; the audio guide or a focused floor-choice beats attempting completeness. The rooftop cafe queue at Sunday lunch is its own small institution.
