Tano Boase Sacred Grove

Tano Boase is a group of sandstone outcrops rising from forest near Techiman, and it is a sacred site of the Bono: the grove is associated with the god Taakora and with the source of the Tano river, and shrines within the rocks are still used, with priests and rites maintained. Narrow clefts and caves in the sandstone were used as refuges during conflict in the pre-colonial period, and guides lead visitors through the passages and up onto the rock for a view over the forest. The grove has been protected by taboo rather than by conservation law, which is why the forest patch survives in farmland. A community project runs the guiding and a simple visitor area.

When to go

November to March in the dry season, when the rock is dry and the paths firm. Mornings are cooler. Ritual days may restrict access to parts of the grove.

Before you go

Parts of the grove are active shrine ground with restrictions on entry and photography. The passages between rocks are narrow and involve scrambling. Facilities are basic. Guides are required and fees negotiated locally.
