Kyabobo National Park

Kyabobo lies against the Togo border where the Akwapim-Togo range runs north, and it is unusual among Ghanaian parks in being genuinely mountainous, with forest in the valleys, savanna on the slopes and a transition zone between the two that gives it a mixed species list. It adjoins Fazao-Malfakassa park across the border in Togo. The best-known walk climbs Breast Mountain, a pair of rounded summits above the park, taking several hours with a view over the range and the plains. Buffalo, antelope, baboons and a small elephant population are recorded but rarely seen. Waterfalls and the Kyabobo river are on the trail network. Facilities are basic and guided walking is the way to see it.

When to go

November to March in the dry season for the walking and the clearest views; harmattan haze in December and January can limit the view. The rains make trails slippery and difficult. Start climbs early.

Honest expectations

The mountain climb is long, steep and hot. Facilities are minimal with basic accommodation in Nkwanta. Wildlife sightings are very unlikely. Guides are compulsory and the park is a long journey from Accra.
