Kerr Batch Stone Circles

Kerr Batch is one of the four groups of stone circles UNESCO inscribed as the Stone Circles of Senegambia, laterite pillars cut and set in rings around burial mounds along the river between roughly the third century BC and the sixteenth century AD. Kerbatch is named in the inscription alongside Wassu, Wanar and Sine Ngayène, and it holds the region's only known V-shaped or lyre stone.

When to go

November to February is the cool dry season. The rains from June to October make the roads difficult. Low sun morning and evening shows the stones best.

Things to know

The site is remote and the drive is long from anywhere with facilities. The museum is small and dated. Wassu, the other Gambian group, is better presented and more visited.
