Three hundred winding river kilometres from the coast, Janjanbureh - Georgetown to the colonial ledgers - occupies MacCarthy Island in the Gambia River, founded in the 1820s as a British trading and administrative post and dozing gracefully ever since. Mango-shaded streets pass tin-roofed warehouses and mission schools from the trading era, small ferries shuttle to either bank, and the town has settled into its modern role: the unhurried base for the middle river's riches - the Wassu stone circles upstream, the chimpanzee-inhabited islands of the River Gambia National Park downstream, and riverbank birding that fills lodge verandas with binoculars at dawn.

What you actually see

  • The old trading quarter - warehouses and mission buildings under the mangoes.
  • The river ferries - the small crossings that are the island's clock.
  • Dawn birding - fish eagles, bee-eaters and kingfishers from the lodges.
  • The middle-river excursions - stone circles and chimp islands from the wharf.

When to go

November to April for the dry season's navigable roads and gentler heat; the middle river is always hotter than the coast. River-lodge nights - falcons of stars, hippo grunts - are the point of staying over.

Honest expectations

Janjanbureh's historic fabric is faded and lightly interpreted - some sites promoted around the slave trade carry stories stronger than their documentation, so take specific claims with care and the general history seriously. Facilities are simple lodges and small shops. The journey is long by road; the reward is pace, not polish.

Nearby

Wassu's megaliths, the River Gambia National Park and Kuntaur.
