Puy de Dome

Puy de Dome is the great grass-covered volcano that gave a whole French department its name: a lava dome rising to 1,465 metres above Clermont-Ferrand, formed around eleven thousand years ago and now the flagship of the Chaine des Puys - a chain of some eighty volcanic cones, craters and domes strung north to south, inscribed with the Limagne fault as UNESCO World Heritage in 2018 for laying a continental rift open to plain view. The Romans thought the summit worth a sanctuary and built a temple to Mercury whose excavated ruins still crown the top beside the panoramic terraces; today a rack railway, the Panoramique des Domes, corkscrews up the cone while walkers take the switchbacking Chemin des Muletiers in under an hour of honest climb. The reward reads like a geology textbook made landscape - cones and craters ranked to the horizon - with paragliders riding the summit lift on fine days.

When to go

May to October for reliable trails and running trains; clear days are everything here, so check visibility before committing - the summit sits in cloud with some regularity. Winter dusts the cones white and thins visits to the hardy.

Honest expectations

The summit is developed - railway station, restaurant, aerials - so wilderness purists should aim for the quieter cones like Puy de Pariou nearby. The foot climb is short but relentlessly steep in its switchbacks; the train books out on fine summer weekends. Summit weather runs far colder and windier than Clermont below.
