Gouffre de Padirac

Padirac opens in the limestone plateau like a wound in the world: a natural shaft roughly 35 metres across and 75 metres deep, ferns and daylight spiralling down its walls to a floor where caving history began - Edouard-Alfred Martel first descended in 1889 and the site opened to visitors a decade later. Lifts and staircases carry you on down to 103 metres below the surface, where the real theatre starts: an underground river runs cold and clear through the dark, and flat-bottomed boats pole visitors along it to chambers on the far side, past the Grande Pendeloque - a stalactite the height of a cathedral hanging above the Lake of Rain - and into the Great Dome hall, whose ceiling vaults nearly a hundred metres overhead. Among the most visited caves in France, it stays a constant cool underground whatever the surface swelters at, and the boatmen's commentary keeps the crossing half gondola ride, half geology lesson.

When to go

Open roughly April to early November - July and August need booked slots days ahead, while June and September flow easily. A hot afternoon is the classic moment: the cave holds a cool constant temperature year-round underground.

Honest expectations

Expect stairs in quantity even with the lifts, damp walkways and a genuine queue culture in August - the timed online ticket is not optional then. The boat section is short and shared; photography from a moving boat in low light tests any camera. Bring a layer - the chill is real after the surface heat.
