Finlayson Area

James Finlayson set up a cotton mill beside the Tammerkoski rapids in Tampere in 1820, and it grew into an industrial complex so large that it effectively ran the city, with thousands of workers, its own housing, church, school and hospital, and the first electric light in the Nordic countries installed in 1882. Production ended in the twentieth century and the red brick buildings were converted rather than cleared: they now hold museums, cinemas, offices, restaurants, a brewery and shops, with the machinery halls kept as open spaces. The rapids that powered it run through the middle of the city between the two lakes, and the whole industrial landscape along them is walkable.

When to go

Year round. Half a day. Museums close on Mondays. The rapids are at their most dramatic after snowmelt in spring.

Good to know

It is now a commercial and leisure quarter rather than an industrial monument, and the conversion is thorough. Individual museums are small and separately ticketed. It is busy at weekends and in the evening.
