Hongdae

Hongdae takes its name from Hongik University, whose art school shaped the district: cheap studio space and student money produced a live music scene in the 1990s, and the Korean indie and punk labels that matter mostly came out of the small basement venues here. Much of that is still going, though rents have pushed some of it toward Yeonnam and Mangwon. What the visitor finds now is layered: the main pedestrian street with buskers most evenings and a crowd watching them, dance studios running drop-in K-pop classes, second-hand and independent clothing shops, art supply stores, a weekend free market by the playground, and after dark a very dense concentration of bars and clubs that runs until the metro restarts. Food is cheap and everywhere. It is loud, young and crowded, and it is the district where a visitor with no plan will find the most going on.

When to go

Any evening; Friday and Saturday are peak and very crowded. Daytime is for shopping and cafes. The free market runs on weekend afternoons in the warmer months.

Things to know

It is loud, packed and heavily commercial - the art-school character is thinner than the reputation suggests. Weekend nights are shoulder to shoulder. Not a place for a quiet evening.
