Svinoy

Svínoy is one of the two islands in the far northeast that have no road link, a rounded green island with a single village of a few dozen people on its western side. The ferry from Hvannasund runs a limited service and cannot always land in swell, and the scheduled helicopter, which the Faroes run as public transport, is the alternative. There is a church, a shop of sorts and walking over the whole island.

What you actually see

• The seabirds - fulmars and other species on the cliffs around the coast.

When to go

June to August is the only practical window. Ferry landings depend entirely on swell and are cancelled often. Helicopter seats are limited and booked ahead.

Honest expectations

Getting stranded is a real possibility; the ferry cannot land in swell and services are sparse. There is essentially no accommodation. Nothing is laid on for visitors.
