Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is a drowned mountain range doing theatre: limestone towers rise sheer and green-topped from jade water, remnants of a karst landscape flooded by seas rising after the last ice age and protected since 1981 as Ao Phang Nga National Park. The famous pinnacle - Ko Tapu, a roughly 20-metre spike balancing on its narrowed base beside Khao Phing Kan - has drawn film pilgrims since 1974, though landing on the spike itself is banned to spare it further erosion. The bay's better secrets open by kayak: hongs, hidden lagoons inside collapsed sea caves, entered through tide-timed tunnels into silent rooms of mangrove and birdsong. Ko Panyi adds the human wonder - a Muslim fishing village standing entirely on stilts over the water, mosque and school included - and the mangrove channels knit the whole bay together.

November to April is the dry, calm prime, and the sheltered bay stays navigable most of the year. Early-morning departures beat the day-trip armada to the pinnacle.

James Bond Island is crowded and souvenir-ringed by mid-morning - the bay's magic lives in kayak hongs and early starts. Hong entry depends on tides, so itineraries shuffle; Ko Panyi's lunch-stop rush feels staged next to an overnight stay.
