Ko Yao Noi sits in the middle of Phang Nga Bay with Phuket to the west and Krabi to the east, and it has developed quite differently from both. The population is largely Muslim, the economy is rubber, coconut, rice and fishing rather than tourism, and although there are resorts the island has not been built over - one road loops it, bicycles and motorbikes are the transport, and most of it is farmland and mangrove. That character carries obligations for visitors: modest dress away from the beach is expected, alcohol is limited and not sold everywhere, and the call to prayer sets the day's rhythm. The beaches are shallow with a large tidal range, so swimming is often poor at low water - people come for the bay views, the kayaking through the karst, and the quiet rather than the sand. The island runs a community tourism club. Ko Yao Yai, the larger neighbour, is quieter still.

What you actually see

  • The working island - rubber, rice, coconut and fishing rather than tourism.
  • The bay position - karst towers on all sides between Phuket and Krabi.
  • The Muslim community - the culture that shapes dress and alcohol norms.
  • The tidal flats - large tidal range and shallow water off the beaches.

When to go

November to April. Ramadan affects opening hours and food availability - check the dates. Boats reduce in the monsoon.

Honest expectations

Beaches are shallow with a big tidal range and swimming is often poor at low water. Modest dress is expected off the beach and alcohol is limited. Fewer restaurants and less nightlife than Phuket or Krabi, by design.

Nearby

Ko Yao Yai is south; Phuket is west and Krabi east across the bay.
