Yeha Temple

The Great Temple at Yeha is built of squared sandstone blocks laid without mortar, so precisely that the joints are close to invisible, standing roofless to around twelve metres and dated to somewhere around the seventh or eighth century BC, which makes it generally regarded as the oldest standing building in Ethiopia. It belonged to the Dʿmt polity, which had close cultural links with south Arabia, and inscriptions and dedications found here are in a related script and language. A church of Abuna Aftse stands beside it, built partly from stone reused from the temple, and holds a collection of manuscripts and crosses. Excavation continues around the site, including a separate palace complex.

When to go

October to March for the roads and comfortable weather. The site is open in daylight with a caretaker.

Practical notes

The temple is a roofless shell and interpretation on site is minimal. The adjoining church museum keeps irregular hours. The region is remote and travel arrangements should be confirmed close to the date. Photography inside the church may be restricted.
