Segeneiti Giant Sycamore

At Segeneiti in the southern highlands stands a sycamore fig of very large size, its canopy spreading wide enough to shade a substantial gathering and its trunk requiring several people to reach around, and it has been the town's landmark and meeting place for generations. Trees of this kind serve as village assembly points across the Eritrean and Ethiopian highlands, and this is among the largest.

Year round; the highland climate is mild. The tree is at its fullest after the main rains end in September. Market days bring the town to life.

Practical notes

It is a single tree and the visit takes minutes. A travel permit is required for movement outside Asmara. There is little else in the town for a visitor.
