The Eritrean Steam Railway

The Italians built it improbable: a 950-millimetre line climbing from Massawa's sea-level heat to Asmara at 2,300 metres through thirty tunnels and a lattice of viaducts, finished in 1911 and counted among the world's great mountain railways. War and neglect closed it; Eritrean veteran railwaymen - many past retirement age - famously rebuilt the upper sections by hand in the 1990s, and today heritage runs steam out of Asmara's period station behind Italian Mallet locomotives a century old, swinging around the escarpment's curves toward Nefasit with cloud below the viaducts. For railway romantics it is a pilgrimage; for everyone else, the best-engineered view in the Horn.

When to go

October to March for clear escarpment views; departures are charter-based and arranged ahead rather than timetabled - Asmara agencies and hotels set them up, and group days fill fastest.

Before you go

This is heritage railroading: runs depend on charter demand, locomotive health and arrangements made in advance - turning up hopeful at the station yields atmosphere, not departure. Carriages are period-authentic, meaning wooden and smoky-charming. The workshop visit alone rewards enthusiasts when trains rest.
