Allemansratten

Allemansratten, the right of public access, is the long-standing freedom that lets anyone in Sweden walk, ski, swim, camp for a night and pick berries and mushrooms across almost all land, whoever owns it. It is the legal and cultural bedrock of the Swedish love of the outdoors, balanced by a duty not to disturb or destroy.

History

Around 1900 the custom that anyone could pick berries in forest and field was already described as established "of old", but the word allemansrätt itself only took hold in the 1940s, after a government inquiry into leisure set up in 1937: with a second statutory week of holiday, the authorities wanted to make it easier for town dwellers to get out into nature. Since 1994 the constitution has said that everyone shall have access to nature in accordance with the right of public access, though the right is still defined mostly by what the law does not forbid; the Environmental Protection Agency sums it up as "don't disturb - don't destroy". Whether it covers commercial berry-picking or organised groups is still argued over, and in 2025 it was added to Sweden's cultural canon (Swedish Wikipedia, Allemansrätten).
