Stockholm Metro Art

The Stockholm metro is often called the longest art gallery in the world, with around ninety of its stations decorated by artists, many left as raw blasted bedrock painted in bold colours or carved with sculpture. Riding the blue line in particular turns an ordinary journey into a tour of cavernous, extraordinary underground spaces.

What to look for

• Kungstradgarden - the ruin-and-fountain grotto station on the blue line.
• T-Centralen - the blue vine-painted cave of the central station.
• Solna Centrum - the fiery red-and-green painted rock ceiling.
• Radhuset and Stadion - more of the blue line's cave stations and the rainbow arch.

When to go

Year-round; it is underground, so weather is irrelevant, and off-peak hours are calmer for photos. A day metro ticket lets you hop between the best stations.

Before you go

It is a metro, so the art is enjoyed amid commuters and trains rather than a quiet gallery, and rush hour is crowded. Quality varies from spectacular to modest across the stations. The blue line holds the most dramatic, so focus there.
