Getting thereAbove San Ignacio in northern Chalatenango; steep road
EntryFree; cabins and viewpoints charged

Miramundo sits at around two thousand metres in the Chalatenango highlands above San Ignacio, and its name, see the world, refers to what it is for: viewpoints along the ridge look south over a great sweep of the country, on the clearest days as far as the Pacific, with the land dropping away in ridges below. Pine and cypress cover the slopes, the air is cold, and cabins, campsites and small restaurants have been built along the road for Salvadorans coming up for the cool. Market gardens grow vegetables and flowers on the terraces. Cerro El Pital is on the same range. Cloud and mist fill the valleys most mornings and often the whole day.

What you actually see

  • The ridge viewpoints - the outlooks south over the country.
  • Pine and cypress - the highland forest along the ridge.
  • Cabins and camps - the accommodation built for the cool climate.
  • Market gardens - the vegetable and flower terraces.

When to go

November to April for the clearest views and the coldest nights, which is what visitors come for. Cloud fills the valleys frequently. Weekends and holidays fill the cabins and the road.

Honest expectations

Cloud and mist remove the view for long stretches. The road up is steep and rough in places. Accommodation is simple cabins and books out at weekends. Nights are genuinely cold and heating is limited.

Nearby

Cerro El Pital is on the same range; La Palma lies below.
