Gebel el-Teir Monastery

The monastery of the Virgin at Gebel el-Teir stands on the edge of a cliff about a hundred and thirty metres above the east bank of the Nile, and it is one of the principal stops on the Holy Family route as the Coptic church traces it, with a tradition that the family sheltered in a cave here. The church is partly rock-cut, with columns carved from the living stone, and tradition dates its foundation to the fourth century and Empress Helena. It is a major pilgrimage site, particularly around the feast of the Assumption in August, when very large numbers arrive and the plateau fills with tents and stalls. Outside those weeks it is quiet. The name means mountain of the bird, from stories about the birds that nest in the cliffs below.

When to go

October to April for a quiet visit; the August feast is the opposite and worth seeing only if crowds are the point. Two hours. Mornings for the view down the valley before haze builds.

Practical notes

It is an active pilgrimage church, not a monument, and behaviour should follow that. During the feast it is extremely crowded and accommodation is impossible. Modest dress is required. The approach road and stairs are steep. Regional travel may involve escorts.
