Mount Hoyo

Mount Hoyo is a limestone rise on the eastern margin of the Ituri forest, riddled with caves and cut by a stream that comes down a series of rock steps known as the Escaliers de Vénus. It was a well-known stop in the colonial period, with a hotel and marked paths, and the infrastructure has largely gone. The caves are entered with local guides carrying lamps, the falls are a short walk from the road, and the forest around holds the same species as the Ituri proper.

When to go

The drier windows, December to February and June to August, are the practical times. The falls run strongest at the end of the wet season. Cave visits need dry weather, since the passages take water.

Honest expectations

The colonial-era infrastructure is gone and what remains is informal: local guides, no lighting, no marked route. The caves are wet and slippery. Arrangements are made in the village on the day rather than in advance.
