Kinshasa

Kinshasa sprawls its millions along the Congo's Malebo pool - one of Africa's greatest cities by any measure, and its undisputed music capital: rumba and its descendants (UNESCO lists Congolese rumba as intangible heritage) pour from venues nightly, the sapeurs turn dandyism into performance art on the boulevards, and the National Museum's collections anchor the cultural circuit alongside the Academy of Fine Arts' sculpture gardens. Background

Teke and Humbu people lived on this site for centuries, when it was called Nshasa, and it became a trading hub during the 19th and 20th centuries. Henry Morton Stanley named it Léopoldville, the name it kept from 1881 to 1966, when it was renamed Kinshasa in tribute to the old village. The city covers 9,965 square kilometers in a broad crescent of flat, low ground, lying on average about 300 meters above the sea. Over 90 percent of its land is rural. Its estimated 18.5 million people in 2026 make it Africa's third-most populous city. Brazzaville lies across a four-kilometer unbridged stretch of the river, and no two capital cities in the world are closer.
