National Museum of the DRC

The Musée National de la République Démocratique du Congo opened in Kinshasa in 2019 in a purpose-built block, built with South Korean help, replacing storage conditions that had put the national collection at risk for decades. It holds tens of thousands of objects, of which a rotating selection is displayed: masks and figures from the Kuba, Luba, Pende, Songye, Chokwe and other traditions, musical instruments, textiles and ritual objects. It is the best place in the country to see Congolese material culture properly lit, labelled and in one place.

When to go

May to September is the dry season in Kinshasa and the most comfortable time in the city generally. The museum is air-conditioned and works in any weather. It closes on some days, so checking ahead is worth it.

Before you go

Only a fraction of the collection is on display at any time. Labelling is uneven and there is little in the way of interpretation for visitors without background. Photography is restricted and bags go into storage at the door.
