Museo del Hombre Dominicano

This is the place to understand what was here before 1492. The collection of Taíno material is the largest anywhere: stone cemís, the three-pointed figures that held ancestral spirits, ceremonial duhos carved as low seats, vomiting spatulas used before ritual, axes, shell and bone work, and pottery from across the island and the wider Antilles. Upper floors cover the African inheritance brought by enslaved people and how it survives in Dominican music, religious practice and daily life, including the carnival traditions of the different regions. It sits in the Plaza de la Cultura, a brutalist 1970s complex that also holds the natural history and modern art museums and the national theatre.

When to go

Year-round and a good option in heat or rain. Closed on Mondays. Weekday mornings are quiet. Combine with the modern art museum in the same plaza.

Honest expectations

The building and much of the display design date from the 1970s and show it, with dim cases and faded labels in places; funding has been thin for years. Labels are in Spanish only in most rooms. Some floors have been closed for repairs at various times. It is a taxi ride from the colonial city.
