Fortaleza Ozama

Building began in 1502 on the bluff where the Ozama river meets the sea, which makes this the oldest surviving European military structure anywhere in the Americas. Its centre is the Torre del Homenaje, a square keep with walls more than two metres thick and a flat roof from which the whole river mouth and the colonial city are visible. Around it run later walls, gun platforms and a powder magazine, added as the threat changed from indigenous resistance to European rivals and pirates. The fortress stayed in military use for well over four centuries and served as a prison into the twentieth. Guides wait at the gate and their commentary is most of the value.

When to go

November to April is the cooler dry season. Mornings avoid both the heat and the cruise groups. The site is small and takes about an hour unless you take a guide, which is worth doing.

Honest expectations

Interpretation on site is thin without a guide, and the guides at the gate work for tips agreed beforehand, which is worth settling clearly. The interiors are largely empty stone rooms. Steps and the tower stair are steep with no handrail in places.
