On flat ground near San Juan de la Maguana a large oval is marked out by a line of set stones, with a larger carved block near the centre, and it is understood as a Taíno ceremonial plaza, one of the biggest recorded on the island, associated with the chiefdom of Maguana. Ball games and gatherings are thought to have taken place there. The site is unenclosed, unexcavated in most of its extent and almost entirely without interpretation.

What you actually see

  • The stone ring - the oval of set stones marking out the plaza.
  • The central block - the larger carved stone near the middle.
  • The scale - one of the largest Taíno ceremonial plazas recorded.
  • The open setting - flat farmland with the mountains beyond.

When to go

November to April is drier and easier underfoot. The site is open at all times. Grass grows high in the wet season.

Honest expectations

There is very little to see and no interpretation at all. Much of the original stone is thought to have been removed over the years. The site is unfenced farmland.

Nearby

San Juan de la Maguana is nearby, and Las Caritas are southeast.
