Valley of the Temples, Agrigento

Ancient Akragas was one of the richest cities of the Greek world, and its sacred ridge - misnamed a valley - still carries the proof: a line of Doric temples above the African-facing coast of Sicily that UNESCO ranks among the finest Greek remains anywhere. The Temple of Concordia, raised in the fifth century BC, survives almost intact - conversion to a church in late antiquity spared it the quarrying that ate its neighbours - and stands with Athens' Hephaisteion among the best-preserved Greek temples on Earth. Around it, the Temple of Juno crowns the ridge's high end, Heracles raises its weathered columns, and the colossal Temple of Olympian Zeus, never finished and long collapsed, is legible in its sheer rubble scale - one of its 7.6-metre telamon giants, reassembled and raised upright again in 2024, stands as centrepiece. Almond trees bloom through the ruins in February, and summer nights light the colonnades like stage sets.

When to go

February brings the almond blossom festival; March to May and October give warm, walkable days. Summer is scorching on the shadeless ridge - go at opening or take the evening sessions, when the temples are floodlit and the heat relents.

Honest expectations

It is a long, exposed walk end to end - water, hat and sensible shoes are not optional in warm months. The archaeological museum holding the best finds is a separate site and ticket uphill. Agrigento's modern sprawl in some sightlines is the price of the location; face the sea and the centuries hold.
