Viborg was one of the oldest and most important towns in Denmark, the place where kings were acclaimed and where the assembly for Jutland met, and its cathedral has stood on the ridge above the lakes since the twelfth century. The medieval building burned and decayed and was almost entirely rebuilt between 1864 and 1876 in granite in a Romanesque revival manner, keeping the original crypt. What makes it worth a stop is what happened next: between 1901 and 1906 Joakim Skovgaard painted the entire interior with biblical frescoes, covering the vaults, walls and apse in a continuous scheme, one of the largest single decorative programmes in Scandinavia. The crypt beneath survives from the original building with heavy granite piers.

What you actually see

  • Skovgaard's fresco cycle - the whole interior painted between 1901 and 1906.
  • The medieval crypt - granite piers surviving from the twelfth century.
  • Twin west towers - the Romanesque revival rebuild of the 1870s.
  • The ridge position - the cathedral above the Viborg lakes.

When to go

Year round. One to two hours. Open daily outside services; Sunday mornings are for worship. A bright day helps because the frescoes are high in the vaults and lit by daylight.

Honest expectations

The building is largely Victorian, not medieval, and visitors expecting an ancient cathedral will find a rebuild. Skovgaard's style is of its moment and divides opinion. Interpretation is limited. The Skovgaard Museum next door charges separately.

Nearby

The Viborg lakes are below the ridge; Hald Lake lies south.
