Universe opened in 2005 on Als, backed in part by the Danfoss engineering company whose factories are nearby, and it is a science park rather than a museum: most of it is outdoors, with several hundred experiments and installations spread across grounds that include water channels, air cannons, pulleys, giant instruments, a segway course and a hill with a chair lift. Indoor halls cover technology, energy, robotics and the human body, with shows and demonstrations through the day. There is a substantial water play area for hot weather and a smaller section on the history of Danfoss and Danish engineering. It is aimed at families with school-age children and is one of the main attractions in the region.

When to go
May to September, since most of it is outdoors and the park runs a limited winter programme. A full day. Danish and German school holidays are busiest. Bring a change of clothes for the water areas.
Honest expectations
Most of the park is outdoors and rain ruins it. It is aimed at children and adults alone will find little. Ticket prices are high. Some installations are out of order at any given time. It is remote and needs a car.
