Trelleborg Viking Fortress

Trelleborg was built around the year 980 on a spur between two streams in west Zealand, and it is the easiest of the Danish ring fortresses to read on the ground: a circular rampart with four gates, courtyards inside marked where sixteen long houses once stood, and an outer ward with a burial ground. Tree ring dating of the timbers gave a precise year, which is how the whole group of fortresses came to be tied to one short building programme. A reconstructed longhouse stands beside the ring and the museum holds the finds. The Danish ring fortresses were inscribed by UNESCO in 2023.

What you actually see

• The summer gathering - the July meeting of craftspeople and re-enactors.

When to go

May to September for the museum, the longhouse and the staffed programme; the July gathering is the busiest and liveliest week of the year and worth either timing for or avoiding, depending on taste. The rampart is walkable out of season, but the buildings close and the field turns to mud after rain.

Honest expectations

Like the other ring fortresses this is grass and earth, and the interest is largely intellectual. The re-enactment side is well done but not to everyone's taste, and on festival days parking and queues are heavy. Facilities are limited. In wet weather the site is bleak and there is nowhere much to shelter.

Slagelse is the nearest town; the Great Belt crossing lies a short drive west.
