Fredericia Ramparts

Fredericia was founded in 1650 as a planned fortress town at the Little Belt narrows, laid out on a strict grid inside a ring of bastioned earth ramparts, and the town was given freedoms that attracted settlers, including religious toleration that brought Huguenot, Jewish and Catholic communities, whose cemeteries and buildings survive. The ramparts are the reason to stop: about four kilometres of earth bank, bastion, ravelin and ditch survive largely complete around the old town, planted with trees and walked as a linear park, which is unusual because most Danish towns levelled theirs in the nineteenth century. The grid inside still reads clearly. A museum in the town covers the fortress and the settler communities it drew.

When to go

April to October for the rampart walk; the path is open year round. Two hours for the full circuit. Spring and autumn colour among the rampart trees is good. Evening light along the bastions is best.

Good to know

The town inside is largely modern and unremarkable, so the walk is the visit. Interpretation along the ramparts is patchy. Some sections pass through ordinary parkland with little sense of fortification. The museum keeps limited hours.
