Fjordenhus opened in 2018 as the headquarters of the Kirk Kapital company and is the first complete building designed by Olafur Eliasson and his studio, standing on its own in the water of Vejle Fjord and reached by a footbridge. It is built from curved brick in four intersecting cylinders, with large circular openings cut through the volumes so that water, light and views pass through the structure, and the ground floor is open to the public with a partly flooded space where the fjord comes inside. Eliasson designed the fittings, lamps and furniture as well, and several of his works are installed in the building. The upper floors are offices and closed. The surrounding harbour has been redeveloped with new housing.

What you actually see

  • Curved brick cylinders in water - the building standing in the fjord.
  • Circular cut-throughs - openings letting light and water pass through.
  • The flooded ground floor - fjord water brought inside the building.
  • Eliasson fittings and works - lamps and installations designed for it.

When to go

Year round. One hour. The ground floor is open on limited days and hours, generally weekdays, so check before travelling. The exterior can be seen from the harbour front at any time.

Honest expectations

Only the ground floor is open and the hours are short, so many visitors see the outside only. It is a private company headquarters, not a public building. There is no interpretation on site. The harbour around it is a construction site in parts.

Nearby

Vejle town centre is a short walk; the Jelling stones lie north-west.
